The first summer transfer window of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Manchester United reign looks sure to be a busy one.

But the new investor's first call to order may not be a glamourous as many fans were hoping following his £1billion purchase of a 27.7% stake at Old Trafford. That's after it emerged trimming the wage bill will be a chief priority to make way for a fresh wave of talent at the Theatre of Dreams.

ESPN reported Ratcliffe and INEOS sport director Dave Brailsford have come to the conclusion the wage bill is in need of reform if they're to realise their vision of a United overhaul. It's believed the club won't be able to make invest as desired without falling afoul of the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) as potential being docked points, and as many as 11 players may face the axe to bring things back into balance.

Top earners like Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof could be made available to potential suitors, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay are also touted for possible exits. Anthony Martial will also clear £250,000 a week off the wage bill when his contract expires in June.

On top of that, it's understood those already out on loan could be shortlisted for sales in the summer. That contingent includes Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Facundo Pellistri (Granada), Donny van de Beek (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Brandon Williams (Ipswich).

United have been busy in the transfer market attempting to build a deeper reserve of star talent in recent years. However, many fans would agree there are currently too many players not justifying their salaries compared to stars at rival clubs that are currently succeeding more.

Varane and Casemiro are two such players who, despite bringing huge prestige from their past postings at Real Madrid, haven't proved worthy of a combined £690,000 a week in wages. That applies to those slightly lower down the ladder, too, with Maguire (£190,000) and Eriksen (£150,000) earning huge weekly sums but perhaps not backing it up.

Erik ten Hag's squad is currently the most expensive in the Premier League in terms of salary, yet United have only just recovered to sit fifth in the division. Ratcliffe and Brailsford want to spend to add more star talent to the squad, but offloading some of those not proving their value may be required if the club is to do so with Premier League parameters.
