James ‘Jimmy’ Fitzgerald, 29, died of a heart attack as he was being rushed to hospital in an ambulance following the stabbing in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

His death has sent shock waves through the community preparing for Christmas and police have charged Craig Ghochani and James Creaghan, both aged 28, with murder and possession of an dangerous weapon.

They appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court and will spend Christmas behind bars.

In a touching family statement, Mr Fitzgerald’s family said: “As to be expected the family is devastated with the new that Jimmy has been murdered.

“Jimmy was full of life and well-loved by the community.

“We accept Jimmy made his mistakes unfortunately Jimmy and Ricky became lost souls to life after the passing of their mother Judy.

“Their mother was their rock and Jimmy and Ricky have tried to keep themselves at bay. This is terrible news.”

Paramedics found the cyclist lying in a pool of blood at 8.20pm and despite being given emergency treatment he succumbed to his injuries.

Detective Superintendent Tanya Jones said: “We believe the victim had been cycling on his bike at the junction of Barn Cottage Lane and Bentwood Crescent when he was attacked by what we believe to have been two men.
